Which tow do you need?

Start with what you drive

The vehicle decides the truck. Find yours below, or call and tell dispatch what you drive.

Everyday car, SUV, van, or pickup

A breakdown, a car that will not start in the driveway, a run to the repair shop, or a tow after an accident. Wheel lift for most of these, flatbed when the car cannot roll or the destination needs it. After a crash, the same call covers the tow and the recovery.

Tesla, EV, or AWD

These ride on a flatbed or with all four wheels off the ground on dollies. Wheels that turn during a tow can damage the motors or the drivetrain. Say EV or AWD on the call.

Lowered, modified, or classic

Corvettes, lowered cars, and body kits need a shallow loading angle and tie-downs placed clear of the bodywork. Dispatch sends a flatbed and an operator who has loaded one before.

Motorcycle or small trailer

Both are light duty jobs on the same number. Tell dispatch the bike or the trailer size and whether it rolls, and the truck comes with the right tie-downs.

How dispatch picks the truck

A wheel lift raises the front or rear wheels and tows the car on the other two. It is quick and fits tight garages and parking decks. A flatbed carries the whole vehicle on a level deck. Tell dispatch what you drive and what happened, and they pick the truck.

What dispatch needs to know

What the tow costs depends on four things

Pickup location, destination, the vehicle and its condition, and any access or recovery needs. Give dispatch those four and the quote follows. The towing cost guide covers each one in more detail.

Questions drivers ask

Light duty towing questions

What is light duty towing?

Light duty towing is the towing of passenger vehicles up to about 10,000 pounds: cars, SUVs, vans, half-ton pickups, motorcycles, and small trailers. It is done with a flatbed, a wheel lift, or dollies. Box trucks, RVs, buses, and commercial vehicles are medium or heavy duty jobs, and Geyers dispatches those from the same number.

Does my Tesla, EV, or AWD need a flatbed?

Usually, yes. Teslas and most other EVs have to ride on a flatbed or with all four wheels off the ground, because spinning wheels can damage the motors. Many AWD, lowered, damaged, or non-rolling vehicles need a flatbed or another loading plan as well. Say EV, AWD, or lowered on the call so the right truck is sent.

Do you tow motorcycles and small trailers?

Yes. Both are light duty jobs. Tell dispatch the make of the bike or the size of the trailer, whether it rolls, and where it is going, and the truck arrives with the tie-downs for it.

Can I get a price before the truck is sent?

Dispatch can quote the tow once it has the pickup location, the destination, the vehicle, and its condition. Ask what the quote includes and what could change after the driver sees the scene. A locked wheel, a ditch, or damage that calls for a different truck can move the price. The towing cost guide explains the factors.

What if the car only needs a jump, a tire, or a lockout?

Then it may not need a tow. A dead battery, a flat with a usable spare, or keys locked inside can often be handled where the car sits. Tell dispatch what happened and they send roadside service or a light duty tow, whichever the problem needs. The towing versus roadside guide walks through the difference.

How soon can a truck get to me?

Dispatch answers 24 hours a day and gives you an estimate on the call. Arrival time changes with current calls, traffic, weather, your location, and the truck the job needs, so ask for the estimate and tell dispatch if the car is in a live lane.

Which areas do you cover for light duty towing?

Geyers dispatches from Germantown and Mt. Airy and covers Montgomery County, Frederick County, and the Washington area, including DC and Northern Virginia. Germantown, Gaithersburg, Rockville, Frederick, and Mt. Airy each have their own page. For anything farther, call and dispatch will tell you.
